Al Jafr: The Mystical Book of Imam Ali
Al Jafr (Arabic: كِتاب ٱلْجَفْر) is a mystical book that, according to the Shia belief, contains the esoteric teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad for his cousin and son-in-law Ali, who is recognized as the fourth Rashidun caliph and the first Shia Imam. [1] The book is said to be written on animal skin, prepared as parchment, and to have various dimensions and colors. [2] The book is also known as Kitab al-mughaybat (lit. 'the book of hidden things') in the Sunni lore. [1]
The Shia believe that Al Jafr was inherited by the Ahl al-Bayt, that is, the House of Muhammad, as part of the secret knowledge available to them. [3] More specifically, the Twelver Shia believe that the book was handed down through their line of Twelve Imams, and that it is now in the possession of their Hidden Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, who would reappear at the end of time to eradicate injustice and evil. [4] The book is thought to contain esoteric teachings, apocalyptic prophecies, and legal injunctions. [5] In particular, Al Jafr is said to have a detailed penal code that accounted even for bruises. The first mention of Al Jafr is often associated with Ja'far al-Sadiq, the sixth of the Twelve Imams. [7] He is reported to have shown the book to some of his companions and disciples, and to have explained some of its contents. [8] According to some sources, Al Jafr consists of two parts: the red part and the white part. The red part contains information about wars, battles, and bloodshed, while the white part contains information about worship, prayers, and rituals. [9]
Al Jafr is often mentioned together with other mystical books attributed to the Ahl al-Bayt, such as Kitab Ali, al-Jami'a, and Mushaf Fatima. [3] These books are also said to contain hidden knowledge and secrets of the universe. [10] Some scholars have tried to study and analyze these books, but their authenticity and contents remain controversial and disputed among different sects and schools of thought. [11]
Al Jafr is also mentioned in popular culture, such as in the storyline of One Thousand and One Nights, where it is described as a book that contains all the secrets of the past and the future. [12] A description of it is also offered by the linguist Richard F. Burton in his supplement to the book. [12]
